Students starting college away from home for the first time have a lot on their plates. When you add food allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, adrenal insufficiency, or any other chronic medical condition or health concern to the mix, it becomes a much bigger challenge. Most kids have never had to take any responsibility for things such as ordering their own medication(s), picking them up from the pharmacy, making their own doctor’s appointments or handling any in-school accommodation requests that their condition(s) require. These things have, for the most part, been handled by parents. A few weeks ago, a young woman working out next to me at the gym suddenly collapsed. She was still unconscious when the ambulance arrived, but luckily came to and seemed to be feeling ok when they left for the hospital.

It was a scary experience, and really made me think about what would happen if I had an accident at the gym (or anywhere else) and needed medical assistance.

As a person living with type 1 diabetes, it’s essential for me that the ambulance crew or first responders know that I have diabetes so they can treat me accordingly.
