Von Willebrand’s Disease, sometimes called “Von Willebrand Disease” or simply “Von Willebrand’s,” is a form of Hemophilia. It is a genetic bleeding disorder found in people who lack the Von Willebrand factor in the blood, which is responsible for helping platelets clump up together when forming blood clots. There are several different types of Von Willebrand Disease, and they are all grouped together under the Hemophilia umbrella group, along with Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B. There are a variety of treatments available, but not all treatments are effective.
If you notice these symptoms or other forms of excessive or abnormal bleeding, it is important to discuss the issue with your primary care physician. If you have Hemophilia A, Hemophilia B, or Von Willebrand Disease, you are at risk of having a major bleeding event. Of particular note are the risks of internal bleeding in the joint spaces and excessive bleeding in the event of a trauma. Emergency personnel need to know immediately if you have a bleeding disorder so that they can act fast to address any external bleeding and take extra precautions to check thoroughly for internal bleeding. If you are unable to advocate for yourself, a medical ID necklace or bracelet will provide this essential information exactly when it’s needed.
