Recently, we introduced our readers to some new friends of ours, the folks at the Kids With Courage Foundation. Kids With Courage is a Kansas City-area nonprofit organization that supports kids with Type 1 Diabetes and their families. With year-round support, education, social, and resource-oriented events the all-volunteer team at KWC are busy people. Add to that their annual One Inspired Evening Gala and their signature Crates Full of Courage efforts, through which they provide outstanding resources and much-needed support to newly diagnosed families at Children's Mercy Hospital, and you've got one amazing organization.
Lauren’s Hope Medical ID Jewelry was founded after CEO and Owner, LeAnn Carlson, created a stylish, interchangeable medical alert bracelet for a teenage girl with Type 1 Diabetes who simply refused to wear the unattractive, uncomfortable medical alert jewelry of the past. Since making that very first bracelet in 2001, Type 1 Diabetes has remained a high priority here at Lauren’s Hope. In addition to regularly attending diabetes events in our community; sending gift certificates, donations, and other forms of support to diabetes-related events and organizations around the world; and making a concerted effort to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes on a regular basis, Lauren’s Hope has donated well over $100,000 to the JDRF. When we say T1D is important around here, we really do mean it.
At Lauren’s Hope, we have a wall filled with customers’ letters. Several of us keep “love letter” files in our desk drawers, many accompanied by wonderful photographs of the incredible people we are fortunate enough to have as lifelong customers. Hearing from our customers is one of our favorite parts of what we do here at LH. We are consistently humbled by customers’ stories of hope, gratitude, tenacity, and love.

The Lauren's Hope Health Challenge is well into its third week, and things are going pretty well around here! There's been quite a bit of recipe-sharing and leftovers-swapping happening, which is a lot of fun! We've also been sharing resources, such as smaller, local meat markets and out-of-the-way health food stores with good prices. It's really great seeing everyone working toward their goals and supporting one another in the process!
Last year, we wrote about the Grant family, one of the few families in the country impacted by LEOPARD Syndrome, also called Noonan Syndrome with Multiple Lentigines (NSwML). So when Lauren’s Hope customer, Tammy Bowers, called to tell us about her newest project, a healthcare app inspired by her son who has LEOPARD Syndrome, we were pretty excited to find out that not only does she know the Grants, she’s actually met them too!

Those of you participating in the Lauren's Hope Health Challenge (which you can still join!) may have noticed that my biggest concern about trying the "Paleo" way of eating for February isn't the lack of bread or chocolate or even milk for my coffee. It's cooking. My "cooking" to date has been a long-standing family joke. I would invite family for holiday meals and they would not-so-subtly ask who was going to be handling the kitchen duties. My mom would come visit and offer to bring in Chinese food for dinner or suggest we all eat out. Until this month's challenge, I had basically mastered the art of taking tofu crumbles out of the freezer, adding some sauce, and microwaving them with some steamed vegetables. It's not my proudest accomplishment.
Earlier this week, I made a big commitment. I decided to adopt a strict Paleo eating plan for one month to try it out, starting on February 1. I decided to share this decision with all of you here on the Lauren’s Hope blog and invite you to join me in making one health-related change for the month of February. It would be fun, I figured, and it would certainly help me stay accountable. So I went about my business, typing up a fun article, putting together some interesting facts and art, and proofreading my work. I had the whole thing all ready to go. And then I scrapped it. I deleted the whole thing.
